Masterclass Opportunity with Katrina Marzella for Young Conductors
AMP and BBE to Host Conducting Masterclass with Katrina Marzella
Brass Bands England and Youth music development Charity, AMP, have announced the details for a conducting masterclass for young aspring conductors with world-renowned musician and conductor, Katrina Marzella.
The masterclass will be held in May and participants will have the opportunity to learn from Katrina and work with the Femmes Fortissimo Brass Band.
Encouraging Diversity and Fostering Ambition
This masterclass has been designed to empower young conductors to develop their skills in an encouraging and inspiring environment. This masterclass is also part of a wider aim to diversify brass banding with conducting being recognised as an area within the brass band community were women and non-binary people are underrepresented.
No experience is necessary to attend this masterclass with enthusiasm and the desire to develop musical leadership skills being the only requirements.
Participants will have the chance to improve their technique and grow their skills with the guidance of Katrina. They will then have the opportunity to practice these skills in context with all-women ensemble - Femmes Fortissimo.
Masterclass Details
Date: Saturday 4th May 2024.
Time: 10am start
Venue: Shepherd Group Brass Band, Huntington, YO32 9PT.
All young conductors aged 14-25 are encouraged to apply, especially female and non-binary applicants.
There are two ways to experience the masterclass: Generators and Take Up the Baton!
Generators Sessions
People wishing to embark on this pathway within the masterclass will be assigned 1-2 pieces selected music to conduct in advance of the day.
Participants will then have twenty minutes on the day to work with Femmes Fortissimo. Participants will benefit from tailored feedback and instruction from Katrina during this session.
Following the session participants will receive guidance notes from Katrina and they will have the opportunity to observe other participant sessions from a raised platform. They will also have the chance to offer feedback to other participants (peer-to-peer feedback).
Take Up the Baton Sessions
Participants in these sessions will be involved as a conductor in the warm-up and discussion part of the day.
They will then be invited to get involved in the Take Up the Baton speed session for 5 minutes with Femmes Fortisimmo and will have the option to stay and observe the afternoon session with Generators.
Participants who wish to attend the afternoon sessions must indicate if they wish to stay pass 12:30pm.
