Brass Bands England Wins Prestigious Editor's Award

Recognition at the Music and Drama Education Awards 2025

Brass Bands England have been honoured with this year's Music Teacher Magazine Editor's Award at the Music and Drama Education Awards 2025. The Music and Drama Education Awards (MDEA) celebrate the impact of professionals, schools, charities and organisations working in music and drama education. The awards highlight excellence in teaching, innovation and leadership across the sector.

Special Honour for Brass Bands England

Unlike most categories, which are shortlisted by an expert panel, this award was personally selected by Phil Croydon, Editor of Music Teacher Magazine.

Speaking about the award, Phil said:

"This Award is in recognition of BBE's outstanding commitment to brass banding in the community, to instrumental teaching in schools and for the collective contribtition of Youth Development Brass Specialists in BBE.

The Growth of Brass Foundations

BBE's five Youth Development Specialists form the backbone of its education initiative, Brass Foundations, which has expanded significantly since launching in 2021. This is not the organisations first recognition at the MDEA - BBE was a finalist in 2023 for the Outstanding Musical Initiative category, marking Brass Foundations' second year.

Representing Brass Bands on a National Stage

Members of the Brass Foundations team attended the awards night on 30th January in London. Reflecting on the recognition, Brass Bands England's Deirdre Waller-Box said:

I'd like to thank Phil and Music Teacher Magazine for recognising BBE's work in brass education and community banding with this award. This achievement reflects not only the dedication of our team, but also the incredible work being undertaken by the community brass bands, music hubs, schools and arts organisations that we have the privilege of partnering with. It is a real honour for BBE to be recieving this award at such an inspiring event, surrounded by so many outstanding contributors in the field of music and drama education.

Continued Advocacy for Brass Education

Deirdre recently spoke to Phil Croydon about Brass Band England's outreach efforts in the December edition of Music Teacher Magazine. She also presented at the Music and Drama Education Expo, which ran alongside the awards, leading a session on preparing an engaging group performance in a single session.
